Sarci and I breathlessly entered the theatre and sat in the front row. I felt so proud walking in arm in arm with this magnificent, head-turning beauty, and she was giddy with excitement.
Sarah McLachlanâs new album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, had been released, and it was a masterpiece. The concert was exquisite. The lights, the sound, the set, the vibe of the band, Sarahâs down-to-earth demeanour and goddess-like beauty took my breath away. How could someone be so human and otherworldly at once? Sheâd have the Glamour Spell down, and then she would shape-shift back into a funny, East Coast girl. But her voice, her golden voice, was flawless. There was something else. She pulled the audience to her and let them into places I hadnât seen opened before onstage. Of course, I knew every word to every song, but she delivered them in a way that went straight into you, expanded you, broke you open. Everyone in that room was rapt. It was an experience of falling in love.
I floated out of there, a deeper devotee. The world looked different. Everything had changed. I saw what was possible at the height of it all. As a young, budding singer-songwriter, I had witnessed a woman in her full expression and power, and it gave me permission to dream. Terry was smart to have me go. He knew that nothing would be more powerful for me to experience in that moment.
Sarci and I walked slowly through the Victoria streets, feeling altered from the night. The street lights illuminated her wild, red hair and her eyes glistened. I remember warm hands, a wide-open heart and a feeling that anything was possible.
Everything was orienting toward healing and opening to a larger world where music and love and nature were carving me into something limitless.
I thought of Sappho, the Greek poet, who wrote in her âOde to Aphrodite,â
. . . I remember:
Fleet and fair thy sparrows drew thee, beating
Fast their wings above the dusky harvests,
Down the pale heavens.
Such beautiful words. Fair thy sparrows. But then, before we know it, so unfair.
